The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) is one of the most successful projects in the countries developing new nuclear power programs, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said at the opening of the international expo and conference AtomExpo Belarus, BelTA has learned.
“Building a two-unit plant in Ostrovets represents one of the most successful projects in the countries that pursue their own nuclear programs. The IAEA provides all possible assistance in the successful implementation of the project,” Mr Yukiya Amano noted.
“Belarus is a very important partner of the IAEA, not only in the development of nuclear energy but in the peaceful use of atom in general,” the IAEA head noted.
According to him, the countries continue to show an interest in nuclear energy. “This allows countries to develop national industries, to improve the well-being of people and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Yukiya Amano noted.
According to the IAEA Director General, 444 units of nuclear power plants are currently in operation in 30 countries, 64 reactors are under construction. 30 countries are actively considering embarking upon nuclear power programs.
