First unit of Belarusian nuclear power plant gets water treatment plant
26.03.2019
A water treatment plant has been commissioned as part of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. It is designed to automatically produce partially desalted and chemically demineralized water, BelTA learned from the website of ASE Company Group. The company is the general designer and general contractor for the project to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
Nuclear units need treated water in order to minimize the amount of depositions on heat exchange surfaces of the primary and secondary reactor circuits, thus ensuring the safe operation of the power-generating units.
Once the nuclear power plant is up and running, the water treatment plant will produce demineralized water for the primary and secondary circuits, spray cooling ponds, backup boiler houses, and so on.
The availability of partially desalted and chemically demineralized water is a necessary condition for cleansing the systems after installation, for startup and commissioning operations, and for starting hydraulic testing of the pipes and equipment of the primary and secondary circuits of the unit, BelTA learned from Vitaly Polyanin, ASE Company Vice President and supervisor of the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction project.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
