Gas leak response exercise held at Belarusian nuclear power plant

MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) – A gas leak response exercise has been held at the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from the enterprise's Telegram channel.

The support systems division of the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant and the Ostrovets branch of the local gas infrastructure operating company Smorgongaz carried out a joint exercise to practice dealing with possible accidents concerning the nuclear power plant's gas distribution and consumption installations.

The readiness of the personnel to take steps to liquidate the accident was checked during the exercise. Skills and actions meant to prevent the accident, localize and liquidate it were practiced. The degree of the personnel's professional and psychophysiological readiness for dealing with the accident was evaluated.

According to the scenario of the exercise, gas leak was detected at the nuclear power plant's startup and standby boiler house. The boilers were switched to backup fuel while the nuclear power plant's operating division and the local gas company Smorgongaz were notified about the accident. Smorgongaz specialists were immediately dispatched to the site of the simulated accident. They turned off gas supply to the installation, which allowed workers of the nuclear power plant's support systems division to promptly start repairing the affected section.

As a result of professional and coordinated efforts of participants of the accident response exercise the simulated accident was promptly dealt with and gas supply to the installation was restored in full.
