01.03.2017
Representatives of the Lithuanian border service were made familiar with the operation of the information center of the Belarusian nuclear power plant on 28 February, representatives of the Information and Public Relations Department of the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant told BelTA.

The visit was arranged as part of a joint event of the Smorgon department of the Belarusian border service and the Vilnius border district.

Lithuanian and Belarusian border service specialists showed a strong interest in the exposition in the information center of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The Lithuanian specialists were particularly interested in the safety and environmental state of the region after the nuclear power plant goes online. The visitors were pleased to hear that if water levels in the Viliya River remain close to the long-time average annual levels, the Belarusian nuclear power plant will irretrievably use up at most 3% of the river’s water flow.

During the fact-finding tour close attention was paid to peculiarities of the Belarusian nuclear power plant design and its differences from the design of the Ignalina nuclear power plant as well as to the safeguards the Belarusian design implements.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the AES-2006 nuclear power plant design that features VVER-1200 type reactors. The construction site is located 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The power plant will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
