In 2016 the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) will virtually double the number of inspections of the enterprises that make equipment for the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Gosatomnadzor First Deputy Head Sergei Drobot during Atomexpo Belarus on 20 April.
According to the source, three inspections were arranged in 2014, 14 inspections in 2015, and 24 inspections will be arranged in 2016. The increase in the number of inspections is attributed to the more intensive manufacturing of equipment for the first and second power-generating units.
The oversight of operations at the construction site near Ostrovets continues. In 2014 Gosatomnadzor arranged seven continuous-mode inspections with the total duration of about 75 days and two comprehensive inspections (21 days). 2015 saw 26 continuous-mode inspections with the total duration of about 120 days and two comprehensive inspections (37 days).
Gosatomnadzor expects the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant to submit the application for the license to operate the first power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in October 2016. The necessary expert evaluations will take about one year.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build an AES-2006 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The Belarusian nuclear power plant will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant, the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
