18.04.2022
MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian nuclear power plant will allow substituting 25% of all the natural gas the country consumes. Professor Irina Novikova, Doctor of Economics, Head of the Management, Technologies for Business and Sustainable Development Department of the Engineering and Economy Faculty of the Belarusian State Technological University, made the statement on the air of the Belarusian TV channel STV, BelTA has learned.

Irina Novikova said: “If we talk about our nuclear power plant, then certainly we have yet to reach the level of France [where nuclear energy utilization is at its peak] but it will substitute 25% of all the natural gas we consume. Belarus consumes about 21 billion m3 of natural gas per annum while the nuclear power plant will substitute 5.5 billion m3 of natural gas.”

“In other words, we will move away from dependence on one source of energy – natural gas,” she noted. “At present we are 86% dependent on Russian natural gas. This is why diversification of sources of energy is very important.”
