First unit of Belarusian nuclear power plant shut down for scheduled preventive repair
The reactor assembly will undergo repairs, including steam generators, a pressurizer, main circulation pumps and a turbine generator. Metal will be inspected as well as welding seams of the reactor equipment and conduits of the systems, which are important for the safety of the first unit.

Nuclear power plant expected to substitute 25% of Belarus’ total natural gas consumption
Irina Novikova said: “If we talk about our nuclear power plant, then certainly we have yet to reach the level of France [where nuclear energy utilization is at its peak] but it will substitute 25% of all the natural gas we consume."

8.2bn kWh of electricity generated by Belarusian nuclear power plant's first unit so far
Viktor Karankevich noted positive dynamics of growing electricity consumption in Belarus. Electricity consumption rose by 2.3 billion kWh in 2021 alone. Electricity consumption by the real sector of the economy went up by 1.3 billion kWh while that of the households rose by 0.25 billion kWh.

Preparations for starting a controlled chain reaction are nearly over at the second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The reactor unit will soon reach minimal controlled power levels – 1% of the nominal power. The lifecycle of the reactor will begin then.

The official said: “The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is a key project for the industry. The commissioning certificate of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was signed on 10 June 2021. The unit is now operating at nominal power levels."

The official said: “The first scheduled preventive repair is supposed to take place in Q2 2022. It will begin at the end of April. We are talking about maintenance operations, which nuclear power plants undergo every year in order to keep the equipment in working order."

Natural gas substitution effect of first unit of Belarusian nuclear power plant pointed out
Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said that since the first unit was connected to the power grid, it has generated 6.9 billion kWh of electricity. It has allowed substituting about 1.8 billion m3 of natural gas, which is roughly what the country's population consumes per year.
